History / Notes

Absalom was the third son of King David, renowned for his handsome appearance and beautiful hair (2 Samuel 13-19). He murdered his brother Amnon for violating their sister Tamar, fled into exile, and later led a rebellion against his father. His death occurred when his hair caught in tree branches as he fled, and Joab killed him. Despite his rebellion, David mourned deeply, crying O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! The name means father of peace, an ironic contrast to his life of conflict.
