History / Notes

Andrew stands as one of the most significant apostles, the first-called disciple of Jesus and brother of Simon Peter. A fisherman from Bethsaida, he had been a disciple of John the Baptist before following Jesus (John 1:35-40). His immediate response was to find his brother Peter and bring him to Jesus, demonstrating evangelistic instinct from the beginning. Andrew appears in key gospel moments: he identified the boy with five loaves and two fish (John 6:8-9), brought Greeks seeking Jesus to meet him (John 12:20-22), and with Philip asked Jesus about the end times (Mark 13:3-4). After Pentecost, tradition holds he preached in Scythia, Greece, and Asia Minor, establishing churches and facing persecution. He was martyred at Patras in Greece on an X-shaped cross, now known as St. Andrews cross, considering himself unworthy to die on the same shape as Jesus. His relics were later moved to Constantinople and then to various locations including St. Andrews in Scotland. He is patron saint of Scotland, Russia, Greece, Romania, and fishermen. The names meaning manly or brave reflects the apostolic courage to witness even to death. Andrews consistent role in bringing people to Jesus models evangelistic faithfulness for all Christians.
