History / Notes
Adalia appears in the Old Testament book of Esther 9:8 as one of the ten sons of Haman the Agagite who plotted destruction against the Jews. When Esther revealed her identity and Hamans plot, the king ordered Haman executed and authorized Jews to defend themselves resulting in the death of Hamans ten sons including Adalia. The Festival of Purim established in Esther 9:20-32 commemorates this deliverance celebrated annually by reading the entire Megillah. During the Purim reading, when Hamans sons names are recited, listeners make noise to blot out their memory. The name thus connects to the dramatic deliverance narrative where Gods hidden hand preserved His people from annihilation. Though its bearer opposed Gods people, the name itself carries positive meaning honorable creating tension between meaning and role.
