History / Notes

Adam stands as the first human created by God in Genesis 1-5, formed from the dust of the ground (adamah) with God breathing the breath of life making him a living being. God placed him in Eden to work and keep it, and he named the animals before Eves creation. His disobedience in eating the forbidden fruit introduced sin and mortality establishing him as the federal head of humanity in Christian theology. The curse declared for you are dust, and to dust you shall return (Genesis 3:19). In the New Testament, Paul presents Adam as a type of the one who was to come (Romans 5:14) explaining that as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive (1 Corinthians 15:22).
