History / Notes

Saint Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 296-373) stands as one of the most significant theologians in Christian history, the defender of Nicene orthodoxy against Arianism. As bishop of Alexandria, he attended the Council of Nicaea (325) as a deacon and spent his life defending the full divinity of Christ against those who denied it. His famous phrase He became man that we might become divine expressed the doctrine of theosis (deification) central to Eastern theology. He wrote On the Incarnation, a classic of Christian thought, explaining why only God incarnate could save humanity. Exiled five times for his faith, he endured repeated persecution from Arian emperors, earning the title Athanasius contra mundum (Athanasius against the world). His steadfastness preserved orthodox Christology through decades of imperial pressure. His biography of Saint Anthony the Great shaped monastic spirituality. The names meaning immortal reflects the Christian hope of eternal life through Christs resurrection. Athanasius embodied the faith that Christ is truly God, truly man, and that through Him believers share in divine immortality. His feast day is May 2 in the West and January 18 in the East. He is one of the four Great Doctors of the Eastern Church and a Doctor of the Western Church.
