History / Notes

John Mark was a companion of Paul and Barnabas, traditionally author of the second Gospel based on Peters testimony. He accompanied them on their first missionary journey but left, causing a dispute between Paul and Barnabas (Acts 15:36-41). Later, Paul called him useful for ministry (2 Timothy 4:11). He is said to have founded the church in Alexandria and was martyred. His Gospel is the shortest and most action-oriented. The name means warlike. Mark represents the ups and downs of ministry, the value of second chances, and the proclamation of the Gospel through Peters eyes.
