History / Notes

The name Jocasta has no biblical history or references in scripture. It is a Greek name, of uncertain etymology but possibly related to "iokaste" meaning "shining moon" or from "io" (violet) and "kaste" (to adorn). In Greek mythology, Jocasta is the queen of Thebes, wife of Laius, and motherΓÇöand later unwitting wifeΓÇöof Oedipus. Her story is central to Sophocless tragedy "Oedipus Rex," one of the foundational works of Western literature. After Laius, warned by an oracle that his son will kill him, exposes the infant Oedipus on a mountainside, Jocasta believes her son dead. Years later, Oedipus arrives in Thebes, solves the riddle of the Sphinx, and is made king, marrying the widowed Jocasta. They have children together before discovering the truthΓÇöthat Oedipus has killed his father and married his mother. When Jocasta realizes the truth, she hangs herself, while Oedipus blinds himself. The name thus carries the weight of one of literatures most devastating recognitions, of a tragedy so profound that it has given us the "Oedipus complex" in psychology. Yet Jocastas character in the play is more complex than simply the object of fate. She tries to comfort Oedipus, dismisses oracles, and seeks to protect him from the truth, showing love and concern even as her actions contribute to the tragedy. Her suicide, like her life, is caught up in forces beyond her control. The names absence from biblical texts reflects its origin in Greek mythology and drama, traditions that developed independently from the biblical world, though they explore themes (fate, knowledge, family) that resonate across cultures.
