History / Notes
Hasan al-Askari (AS) is the 11th Imam in Twelver Shia Islam, son of Ali al-Hadi and father of Muhammad al-Mahdi, the 12th Imam who is believed to be in occultation and will reappear as the promised savior. His title al-Askari derives from the military district (askar) in Samarra where he was confined by Abbasid authorities along with his father, under close surveillance to limit their influence. Despite this restriction, he maintained his spiritual leadership and prepared the community for the occultation of his son. The name is specifically important in Shia Islam, honoring the 11th Imam and connecting the bearer to the chain of Imams leading to the awaited Mahdi. It expresses love for the Ahl al-Bayt and connection to the Imamate.
