History / Notes

Amiel appears in Numbers 13:12 as one of the twelve spies sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan. He represented the tribe of Dan among the leaders chosen to assess the Promised Land. The spies spent forty days examining the land, its people, and its produce, returning with a single cluster of grapes so large it had to be carried on a pole (Numbers 13:23). Ten spies brought back a negative report emphasizing the strength of Canaans inhabitants and causing the people to rebel against entering the land. Amiels specific report is not detailed, but as one of the twelve, his testimony contributed to the crisis of faith that resulted in Israels forty years of wilderness wandering. The name also appears in 1 Chronicles 26:5 as a son of Obed-edom whose family guarded the ark and served in temple worship. This later Amiel represents faithful service in contrast to the spys ambiguous role. The names meaning God of my people or my people are of God expresses covenant relationship between God and Israel. It acknowledges that Israels identity derives from belonging to God. Amiel thus carries the tension between the privilege of being Gods people and the responsibility to trust His promises demonstrated in the spy narrative.
