History / Notes

Amoz appears in the Old Testament as the father of the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 1:1, 2 Kings 19:2, 2 Chronicles 26:22). Beyond this relationship, nothing is known of him, yet his name is preserved because of his famous son. The name is distinct from Amos the prophet though similar in English spelling; in Hebrew they are different names. Amozs significance lies entirely in fathering one of Israels greatest prophets, whose ministry spanned decades and whose writings profoundly shaped Jewish and Christian understanding of Gods holiness, judgment, and salvation. Isaiahs call vision (Isaiah 6) and his prophecies of the suffering servant and coming Messiah established themes that would find fulfillment in Jesus. The New Testament quotes Isaiah more than any other prophet, demonstrating his foundational importance. Amoz thus represents the many faithful parents whose names are preserved only because of their childrens significance. Though unknown, he presumably raised Isaiah in the faith and supported his prophetic calling. The names meaning strong or forceful appropriately describes one whose son would be a powerful force for Gods word. Amoz stands for all the quiet faithful whose influence shapes future generations though their own names remain obscure. Their faithfulness makes possible the work of those who become famous.
