History / Notes

Andreas is the original Greek form of Andrew, the name of the first-called apostle and brother of Simon Peter. Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist before following Jesus (John 1:35-40), demonstrating his spiritual seeking. He is named in all lists of the Twelve (Matthew 10:2, Mark 3:18, Luke 6:14, Acts 1:13) and appears in several significant gospel moments: he brought the boy with loaves and fishes to Jesus (John 6:8-9), brought Greeks seeking Jesus (John 12:20-22), and with Philip asked Jesus about the end times (Mark 13:3-4). According to tradition, Andrew preached in Scythia, Greece, and Asia Minor, and was martyred at Patras on an X-shaped cross (now called St. Andrews cross). His relics were later transferred to Constantinople and eventually to Amalfi and St. Andrews in Scotland. He is patron saint of Scotland, Russia, Greece, and fishermen. The names meaning manly or brave reflects the courage required for apostolic ministry and martyrdom. Andrews example of bringing others to Christ (first his brother Peter, then the boy with loaves, then Greeks) models evangelistic witness. Andreas thus represents apostolic faith, evangelistic zeal, and courageous witness unto death.
