History / Notes

Aner appears in Genesis 14 as one of three Amorite brothers (Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre) who were allies of Abraham. When Abraham learned that his nephew Lot had been taken captive during the invasion of the four kings, he assembled his trained men and pursued the raiders. His Amorite allies accompanied him in the rescue mission, demonstrating loyalty and military cooperation across ethnic lines. After the victory, when the king of Sodom offered Abraham the goods recovered, Abraham refused, saying only that his allies should receive their share (Genesis 14:24). This ensured Aner and his brothers were rewarded for their faithful support. The Amorites were among the Canaanite peoples who would later oppose Israels entry into the land, but this early narrative shows peaceful coexistence and even alliance between Abraham and Amorite chieftains. Aner represents the positive relations Abraham maintained with local peoples, his ability to form alliances, and his commitment to ensuring allies received fair treatment. The names meaning boy or youth may seem odd for a chieftain but likely reflects his role as a younger leader or a familial designation.
