History / Notes

Azariah appears frequently in the Old Testament as the name of several significant figures. Most notably, Azariah was the companion of Daniel given the Babylonian name Abednego (Daniel 1-3). Along with Hananiah (Shadrach) and Mishael (Meshach), he refused to worship Nebuchadnezzars golden image and was thrown into the fiery furnace, from which God delivered them. His faithfulness under persecution became an enduring example of trusting God even unto death. Another Azariah served as high priest during Solomons reign (1 Kings 4:2). Several kings of Judah bore the name, including Uzziah who is also called Azariah (2 Kings 15:1-7). A prophet Azariah encouraged King Asa to reform (2 Chronicles 15). The name appears repeatedly in priestly and prophetic contexts. The names meaning Yahweh helps is demonstrated in each bearers story. In the fiery furnace, God helped Azariah and his companions miraculously. As high priest, Azariah helped lead worship. As king, Azariah/Uzziah experienced both divine help and later judgment for pride. The name thus expresses trust in divine assistance and the reality of Gods help throughout Israels history. In Christian tradition, the three young men prefigure Christs resurrection and the faithful who endure trial. Azariah represents those whom God helps in every circumstance.
