Saint Amator of Auxerre (c. 344-418) served as bishop of Auxerre in Gaul and is remembered as the predecessor and mentor of Saint Germanus of Auxerre, one of the most influential bishops of the 5th century. Amator was known for his holiness, pastoral care, and dedication to rooting out pagan practices remaining in rural Gaul. He confronted local nobles who maintained pagan customs and worked to establish Christian worship throughout his diocese. His most famous act was cutting down a sacred tree that pagans continued to venerate, demonstrating the churchs determination to eliminate idolatry. Despite opposition from local powers, he persisted in his reforms and established the cathedral church of Auxerre. He ordained Germanus as his successor recognizing his potential for leadership.
