History / Notes
Saint Arbogast (d. 678) was an Irish or Scottish missionary who became bishop of Strasbourg, one of many Celtic monks who evangelized continental Europe during the early Middle Ages. Born in Ireland, he left his homeland as a peregrinatio (spiritual exile) for Christ, following the Celtic tradition of wandering for the gospel. He settled in Alsace where his holiness attracted followers, and he was eventually appointed bishop of Strasbourg by King Dagobert II. He founded monasteries, evangelized pagans, and established Christianity throughout the region. His most famous miracle was raising a prince from the dead after he died in a hunting accident. His relics are preserved in Strasbourg, and he is patron saint of the city. His feast day is July 21. Arbogast represents the Irish missionaries who re-Christianized Europe after the barbarian invasions, bringing monastic spirituality and evangelistic zeal to the continent.
