History / Notes

Edith Carlmar (1911-2003) was a pioneering Norwegian actress and director who, together with her husband, founded Carlmar Film, one of Norway's first independent film production companies in the 1950s. The name Edith is derived from Old English "Eadgy├░", combining "ead" meaning "prosperity" or "fortune" and "gy├░" meaning "war", translating to "prosperous in war" or "fortunate warrior". She directed and produced several Norwegian films in the 1950s and 1960s, including "The Summer Wind" (1955), becoming one of the few female film directors in Norway during that era. Carlmar also acted in many of her own productions, demonstrating her versatility as both a performer and a behind-the-scenes creative force. The name Edith offers parents a classic, strong name with royal prestige (borne by Queen Edith of England, wife of Edward the Confessor) representing prosperity, strength, and the pioneering spirit of women in Norwegian cinema.
