Esau was the elder twin of Jacob, son of Isaac and Rebekah. He sold his birthright to Jacob for stew and was tricked out of his blessing (Genesis 25-27). He became the father of the Edomites. The writer of Hebrews calls him profane for despising his birthright (Hebrews 12:16). Despite this, he reconciled with Jacob (Genesis 33). The name means hairy, describing his appearance at birth.
